Own Your Labs (OYL)

Published June 2026  ·  v1.0 — original

Own Your Labs is the cheapest legitimate blood testing option in the DTC space — and it's not close. A lipid panel costs $10. ApoB is $17.20. HbA1c is $8.80. LC/MS testosterone (the gold-standard method) is $116, which is what other platforms charge as an add-on to a $495 panel. OYL was founded by Dave Feldman of Cholesterol Code, whose background is in citizen science and self-experimentation — and that origin shapes everything about the product. It is raw data access, priced for people who know exactly what they want, and who don't need anyone to explain the results.

The test catalog is solid — all the markers that self-quantifiers care about are available. The à la carte model means theoretical depth is unlimited, but the practical experience requires knowing what to order. There are no pre-built panels, so a first-time user without a specific goal may struggle. The availability of NMR LipoProfile and LC/MS testosterone at low individual prices is differentiated.

Citizen science dataAnonymized opt-in data goes to public research pool
The underlying tests are Quest clinical assays — the same quality you'd get from a physician order. OYL doesn't cut corners on the lab side; the cost savings come from the business model, not cheaper testing. LC/MS testosterone and NMR lipoproteins are available for those who want them. The citizen science component is a genuine contribution to open research, not a marketing gimmick — Feldman's track record and the Citizen Science Foundation affiliation are credible.

Wearable integrationNone
Actionability is OYL's weakest dimension by design. The product is raw data access — results arrive as standard Quest reports with reference ranges and nothing more. For the audience OYL was built for (researchers, self-experimenters, biohackers with existing knowledge), this is fine. For someone ordering their first ApoB test, it won't tell them what to do with the number. If you need interpretation, look elsewhere. If you don't, OYL doesn't charge you for it.

OYL's value score is the highest of any platform we've reviewed. Individually priced tests at these rates are essentially unmatched in the DTC space. A meaningful blood panel — CMP, CBC, HbA1c, fasting insulin, lipid panel, ApoB, Lp(a), TSH, ferritin, and Vitamin D — costs roughly $195 and covers most of what a general health-conscious person needs to know. The same panel via Function Health or InsideTracker would cost $365–$589. The 10% citizen science discount drops it further.

The biggest friction point is the paper order form — you must print it and bring it to the draw site. In 2026, this feels like a significant UX gap vs. competitors who handle everything digitally. The Quest footprint is excellent. The web portal is functional but bare. Five states are excluded due to private lab ordering restrictions. No app, no mobile-optimized dashboard. For the price, these trade-offs are entirely reasonable; against the full DTC market, they drag the experience score down.
Build your own panel for ~$195 If you know what you're doing, OYL is the most cost-efficient way to get meaningful blood data. A solid general health panel — CMP ($10), CBC ($8.40), HbA1c ($8.80), fasting insulin ($14.40), lipid panel ($10), ApoB ($17.20), Lp(a) ($35.20), TSH ($13.20), ferritin ($15), Vitamin D ($44.60), hsCRP ($26.40) — runs about $203 before the citizen science discount. That's a more complete picture than most annual physicals, for less than most competitors charge for their base tier.

Bottom line
MYM verdict
The cheapest legitimate blood testing available — and that's the whole point. OYL is built for people who know what they want, know how to read the results, and don't want to pay for coaching they don't need. At $17.20 for ApoB and $8.80 for HbA1c, it's the most cost-efficient way to run your own experiments or add targeted markers between comprehensive annual panels. Not for beginners. For self-quantifiers, there's nothing better at this price.
